Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training

What is BFR and is it right for me?

Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is an effective way to improve muscle size and strength at lower loads than traditional strength training. It causes a wide variety of systemic effects such as increased cellular swelling, increased type II fiber activation, and more.

BFR has been shown to be a safe and effective mode of exercise for the young and healthy, athletes, older populations, and those who may me load compromised (post-surgical).

Blood Flow Restriction Training: What about the risk of blood clots?

BFR training has been studied quite extensively and has been determined to be a safe mode of exercise. The fear of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), otherwise known as a blood clot,  may be an initial concern when considering BFR. However, research has shown that with both acute and chronic use of BFR cuffs during resistance exercise that the risk of DVT is no greater than that of normal resistance training.

Much like normal resistance exercise, BFR in conjunction with resistance training, has the ability to activate the fibrinolytic system. After training with BFR there is an uptick in production of tissue plasminogen activator, otherwise known as tPA. This protein is actually known for its ability to degrade thrombus (blood clot) formations. This information is powerful in determining the safety of BFR for the general public.

BFR is a safe and trusted form of exercise by many medical professionals including Doctors of Physical Therapy and Chiropractors. It is best to be performed under the supervision of a trained professional.
